This coffee table was an existing piece, that I decided to keep, because it works. Not only is it the right scale, it is solid and has the most beautiful carved details under the glass top.

And coincidentally, this post is about doing what you love and not following trends, so I like to think that also means the same thing as keeping the pieces you love!
Many people and designers like to keep up with, and follow the trends. I tend to think that trends make things, and design temporary. When designing for my ideal clients, I love a good mix of old, and new. It allows the spaces created to feel more “real” and collected. It also allows the clients to see themselves in the designs, and be a part of their space.
This antique writing desk that was also preexisting, and was the perfect addition to the clients’ bedroom, allowing us to create this beautiful vignette.
In this particular project featured, there is at least one piece of preexisting furniture used, in every room. And in some cases, old things were just giving new life with the use of paint. There is often no reason to tear everything out of an existing house; when they still fit the clients style, works great with the new selections, or just happens to be a piece that the client loves.
On the other hand, when starting with a completely blank slate, this creates the opportunity for your designer to source antiques, and creatively incorporate them into your designed space.
